Climb the legendary peaks of the Ossau Valley...
Pic du Midi d’Ossau (2,884 m)
The peak of all legends
Few mountains retain such a haughty solitude that their mere presence defines an entire landscape. Such is the case with the Pic du Midi d’Ossau.
It is a monument that offers an ideal playground for climbing, with around a hundred routes ranging in grade from 3b (easy) to 7b (very difficult).
The standard route up this ancient volcano is the easiest way to reach the summit. This hike requires thorough preparation and a good level of fitness, given its length and elevation gain (a full day’s hike with an elevation gain of over 1,000 metres).
The alternation between three chimneys, each about twenty metres long (for safety, take a 50-metre rope to negotiate them, as well as a helmet for the entire ascent), and sections of straightforward walking adds a playful element to this climb.
However, this summit should not be underestimated; it requires a fair amount of experience… and the wisdom to know when to turn back.
Guidance from a professional is strongly recommended (as are a helmet and a spare rope).
At the summit, a breathtaking 360° view awaits!South Ridge of Pène Sarrière (1,936 m)
The tightrope route
A peak that adorns the Cirque de Gourette.
To the north, its slope is covered in tall grass and blueberry bushes, flanked to the west and east by two vertical faces of beautiful limestone.
This little peak is so pretty that it looks like a trinket in the landscape.
The south ridge is not visible; it is so narrow that many would give up on attempting it, as at its start the ridge is barely wider than a shoe sole…
Less than 4 hours round trip from Gourette.
A professional guide is strongly recommended.
Le Palas (2,974 m)
A beautiful granite pyramid in the land of lakes.
This peak, the highest in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, is accessible to any amateur in good physical condition.
Although not difficult, it does feature a few vertiginous sections, particularly on the Géodésiens ridge, and offers a magnificent panorama.
From the Arrémoulit refuge, this 670m ascent can be done as a loop: ascend via the Ledormeur chimney and descend via the Géodésiens ridge, or vice versa.
Guidance from a professional is strongly recommended.
