Presentation

Pratical hike...
To walk the paths of the Ossau Valley, it is important to know and respect some safety instructions to preserve and protect the environment.

Before Leaving…

  • Check mountain weather: 08 92 68 02 64 or www.meteofrance.com.
  • The 7-day newsletter is posted daily at the information offices of the Tourist Office Vallée d'Ossau
  • For more information, contact the PGHM +5 59 10 02 50 in Oloron-Sainte-Marie
  • European emergency call: 112
  • Know how to give up in case of bad weather, even in full course.
  • Prepare your hike taking into account the difference in altitude: 1 hiker covers 300 m of difference in altitude per hour and goes down 500.
  • Map your route on a topographic map (preferably 1/25 or 1/50).
  • Take the hiking route.
  • Learn about the regulations of the areas crossed: Pyrenees National Park, nature reserve...
  • If you are roaming, check with the shelters and book your night and meals.
  • Avoid leaving alone and warn of your destination.

Equipment to be provided :

  • Pack a backpack (even for a short hike) with water, cereal bars, windbreaker, fleece, sunglasses, sunscreen, headgear, binoculars and camera.
  • Provide a pharmacy kit, insect repellent against horseflies, mosquitoes and ticks. Inspect yourself after a hike for possible ticks (Lyme disease).
  • Wear proper footwear with suitable walking shoes.

During the hike :

  • Prefer an early departure to avoid late afternoon storms
  • Take frequent breaks, without hesitating to drink and eat. Do not drink stream water without treating it.
  • Don’t let your children run alone, in front, without knowing the course. Equip them like you.
  • Keep your dog on a leash.
  • Beware of the shepherds' dogs that guard the herds.
  • Bypass the herds, because frightened beasts can load
  • Do not eat berries, mushrooms and plants without being sure that they have been properly identified.
  • Know how to shorten your hike or turn around in case of difficulty.
  • Stay discreet, this will allow you to observe the animals and it will preserve their tranquility.
  • Respect activities and men, private property, do not cross fields.
  • Close the gates after you pass.
  • The shepherds' huts are occupied in the summer by shepherds and not accessible to the public except in emergencies. Outside this period, you can use them as shelters. Do not leave any waste.
  • Do not feed wild and domestic animals.
  • Do not pick flowers, admire and photograph thinking that others like you will be happy to discover such beautiful nature.
