My First Mountain Refuge Experience in the Ossau Valley

Presentation

Itinerant Hiking Trip

This trip is an itinerant trek, meaning each day brings a new stage. Every morning, you set off from the previous day’s arrival point and reach a new destination by the end of the day. This format requires carrying your personal belongings throughout the journey, so it is important to carefully prepare your backpack, keeping weight and essentials in mind.

Level

This trip is suitable for hikers with a reasonable level of fitness.

  • Elevation gain: between 600 and 700 meters on the first day, with a similar descent on the second day
  • Walking time: approximately 4 to 5 hours of hiking per day

The routes follow a variety of terrain: tracks, paths, and trails, with occasional off-trail sections. The terrain can be rocky or stony but does not present any particular technical difficulty.

A good level of fitness is recommended. Regular physical activity prior to the trip is advised to fully enjoy the experience.

The programme remains flexible and may be adjusted depending on the group’s level and expectations. Whether you prefer a more sporty challenge or a gentler pace to enjoy the atmosphere of mountain refuges, everything can be adapted.

Comfort level

Overnight stays are in staffed mountain refuges or guesthouses.

  • Dormitory accommodation, sometimes shared with other groups
  • Blankets are provided
  • A sleeping bag liner (sleeping sheet) is required
  • Comfort is simple and authentic: showers are rare or sometimes unavailable. However, a wash area with a sink is usually accessible

Full board

The trip is offered on a full-board basis, allowing you to fully enjoy the experience without worrying about meals.

  • Breakfast: continental style (tea, coffee, milk, cereals, bread, butter, jam), provided by the refuge
  • Lunch: picnic prepared each morning by the refuge
  • Dinner: hot, convivial meal usually including soup, a main dish with starch, cheese, and dessert

Start and finish point

This is a loop itinerary: you return to the starting point at the end of the trip.

The departure point is accessible by public transport during the summer season, making travel arrangements easier.

The trip is confirmed from 4 participants. Other dates are available on a private basis.
