Rébénacq, the bastide of the valley
At the gateway to the Ossau valley, nestling in the foothills of the Pyrenean foothills, Rébénacq is an ancient bastide town founded by a lieutenant of Gaston Fébus in 1347. At the time, bastides were new, enclosed towns built on an identical plan: a central square surrounded by a covered passageway opening onto arcades.
The village is part of "Bastides 64", an association of the 15 bastides in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department.
The pretty Place de la Bielle retains its original dimensions. The village then expanded along the Néez stream (picturesque wash-houses, picnic area).
"L'oeil du Néez" is a spring that supplies water to the town of Pau. Signs along the banks of the stream (near the pelota court) tell its story.
