Sainte-Colome, an ancient village in the heart of Béarn

With its thousand-year history, architectural heritage, rural traditions and landscapes opening out onto the Pyrenees, Sainte-Colome offers a distillation of the Béarn identity and is an unmissable stop in the Ossau Valley.

Sainte-Colome is one of the oldest villages in Béarn. First mentioned in 1110 as Sancta Columba, it owes its name to a young martyr of the 3rd century, Saint Colombe, who was beheaded in 274 on the orders of Emperor Aurelian.

Even today, Sainte-Colome charms visitors with its beautiful 16th-century rural houses, adorned with carvings characteristic of Ossau architecture.
As you wander through its narrow streets, you will also discover the remains of a castle, or ‘fortified house’, dating from the 13th century, a testament to its medieval past.

A strategic site steeped in history and legend

Long before it developed into a village, the site of Sainte-Colome had occupied a strategic position since the early Middle Ages. In the 9th century, against a backdrop of unrest and invasions, a lord is said to have built a small fort on a feudal mound there in order to control the routes between the Ossau Valley and the plains of the Pays de Nay.

This defensive post formed part of a network of fortifications, including those at Castet and Iseste, enabling threats to be monitored and reported.
The castle of Sainte-Colome played an important role until its destruction during the Wars of Religion. Now in ruins, it remains a striking feature of the landscape and of local memory.

On the Way of St James

Situated on the Way of St James, Sainte-Colome is an important stopover in the Ossau Valley.
The village marks the point where the Piedmont Route (GR78) and the Ossau Route (GR108) diverge.
Pilgrims in particular take the ‘Cami dou Seignou’, known as the ‘Way of the Lord’.

Saint-Sylvestre Church, a jewel of the local heritage

Saint-Sylvestre Church, listed as a Historic Monument, is one of the key elements of the local heritage.
Its bell tower, an imposing 12th-century square tower, bears witness to the early stages of construction, whilst the building was remodelled and completed in the 16th century in the Flamboyant Gothic style.
With its single nave, polygonal chevet, tall, slender windows and richly decorated portal, the church perfectly illustrates the southern religious architecture of the period.
Its imposing presence reflected the importance of Sainte-Colome on the pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela.

The Trois Croix site: panoramic views and traditions

To the north of the village, the Trois Croix site is a remarkable vantage point offering panoramic views of Sainte-Colome, the Pyrenean foothills and the Rey massif.

In the past, it hosted religious processions, particularly during Rogation Days, as well as popular events such as torchlight processions.
Today, it remains a landmark in the landscape and a prime spot from which to admire the surrounding area.
