Sporting hikes

Presentation

Hiking, from summits to itineraries !
If you're a keen hiker, the Ossau valley is the place for you, with access to the high mountains. It's here that you'll rub shoulders with the highest peaks in the Pyrenees, in search of spectacular views of the surrounding peaks: Ossau, Palas, Lurien, Balaïtous and Ariel. You can go for a day's hike along the local paths or build up your itinerary between refuges and gîtes along the GR10, the HRP and the Pilgrim's Way to Santiago de Compostela.
Sporty hikes with gradients of between 500 and 1,200 metres, between valleys and high mountains, to reach the highest peaks and discover the most beautiful mountain lakes.
Up there, on the mountain pastures, shepherds tend their flocks all summer long. It's also where, in the huts, they make their cheese.

The topo guide to the 64 walks in the Ossau Valley is on sale at the offices of the Ossau Valley Tourist Office.

4 major touring routes

It's when you're out and about that you best discover the richness of a region. If you'd like to explore the mountains rucksack to rucksack, from hut to hut or completely on your own, here are a few ideas for routes along some of the greatest hiking trails.

Tour of the Ossau Valley

This is a low and medium-altitude hiking route, with a maximum altitude of 1830 metres, which you can complete in 7 days from May to October, conditions permitting.
Starting from Les Eaux-Chaudes, you'll wander between villages (Laruns, Bilhères, Louvie-Juzon, Castet), plateaux (Bénou, Zoom), ports (Castet, Aste) and the Col d'Aubisque.
This route is also the training ground for trail runners. The Grand Trail of Ossau Valley uses this route.

The Gabas-Gourette stage in the Ossau valley is one of the most challenging, with an altitude difference of 1,600 metres.
The GR 10 crosses the Ossau valley between the Col d'Ayous, arriving from the Chemin de la Mâture in the Aspe valley, and Lac d'Anglas before Gourette.

The Haute Route Pyrénéenne (HRP)

Experienced hikers who are used to mountain refuges know this route well.
In 45 stages, the HRP crosses the Pyrenees using high mountain paths.
In the Ossau valley, from the Col des Moines to the refuge de Pombie and from the refuge de Pombie to the refuge d'Arrémoulit, these two stages will take you right up close to the peaks of Ossau, Palas and the high-altitude lakes.
Mineral lovers will be delighted !
